This weekend, Dunoon Burgh Hall will host an Art Conservation Open Day focused on the African artworks in the Argyll Collection. These previously overlooked artworks have been the focus of a research project led by Kate Cowcher, and received media attention in 2021 when news that they had been researched and reattributed was made public. Owned by Argyll and Bute Council, the artworks have lived outside of museums in schools and libraries since the 1960s and 70s, and have, therefore, never received any conservation attention.

This week the twelve paintings and prints, with support from the Impact and Innovation fund at St Andrews and the CHARTS network, are going to be examined by conservator, Sylvia Krauss, to assess their state. After her examinations, the process is opening up to the public to allow anyone interested in learning more about conservation, technical art history or this remarkable cluster of African modern art to join the team at Dunoon Burgh Hall.

Alongside opportunities to try out ‘condition checking’ these works of art, there will be informal talks and demonstrations from Christina Young (Professor of Technical Art History and Conservation at University of Glasgow) and Nancy Dantas (C-MAP Africa Fellow, Musuem of Modern Art, NYC).
